Japanese Iwasaki razors

Much has been said regarding these hand forged razors and, having now ‘test-driven’ one for myself, I can confirm that they are as good as it gets.

Made by a master smith, two kind of steels have to be forged together to produce these razors, all by hand: a soft (Jigane) iron and a hard (Hagane) steel (Swedish steel).

After forging, the blank is then brought to its finished shape, then is ground, polished and struck with the maker’s mark

.

The blade is satin finished with the spine and handle being in ‘forge-black’, left over from the forging process. They are presented in a beautifully finished box crafted from a very lightweight wood, the back of which could even be pasted to use as a strop!

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in the maker’s box as shown below. All razors  will be insured for carriage.

Specifications:

Steel: Swedish Steel (SK 2)

Carbon content: ca. 1.15-1.25

Hardness: ca. 64 HRC

Length total: 160 mm

Length blade: 50 mm

Size: approx equivalent to a 6/8 -  7/8 western blade

Weight: 40 grams approx.

Grind: Japanese - This razor is for both left- and right-hand use.

The razor is of one-piece construction and has no ‘scales’ on it as do Western-style straight razors. The edge is also shorter at some 2”/50mm but is every bit as capable as a longer, Western blade. Seen above on its black velvet bed and to the right wrapped as delivered.

Blade details - note how the spine is left in ‘forge-black’ and the tiny chamfer at the tip, which makes the razor that bit easier to use. Above: the maker’s mark, deeply struck to last as long as the blade itself.

To the right is  pictured the reverse side of the blade, again with superb detailing touches. Above: seen end-on, the asymmetry of the grind is clearly seen.

Here is a tool refined to it uttermost: not a superfluous piece of metal to be seen with form following function to give a classical and  elegant piece of shaving equipment. Even the box is part of the production - it can be pasted and used as a razor strop!

Cheap? Very far from it.

Value for money? Considering the care with which it’s made, and the longevity you can expect - an absolute bargain!

Remember - the price you see is the price you pay - no hidden extras!
