PLEASE NOTE -

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made in Germany – probably Solingen – for Burnell’s of Sheffield. Year of manufacture is likely around the 1950’s. Specifications are as follows:

The blade is a 7/8 round point, fully hollow ground to about Henckel scale 8. The blade shows few signs of age and the front is marked with the words ‘Burnl’s Revue’ (spelling is correct!) that was once doubtless gold-washed but now exists as a ‘ghost’ image, though still perfectly legible. Hone wear is evident but very even. The edge itself is some 2.75” long and is shave-ready.

The tang is jimped above and below for grip and is etched to the front side with the words – now a little faint – ‘Burnell Sheffield’ and to the other side is struck ‘German ground, Germany’.

The scales are workmanlike black plastic with bevelled edges, two pins and a white spacer. The blade action is good and there’s no fouling on closure.

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in a new black plastic razor box.

This is a very good quality piece, ideal for anyone who likes a bigger blade, and is in extremely fine overall condition. Perhaps a little too large for a beginner but would fit nicely into any rotation for the more seasoned user.

If you already own a razor - or several - that need honing to bring them back into a shave-ready state, why not take a look at our new website? It lists our services and full scale of charges - all available online!
