PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made by Gotta, Germany. Exact year is unknown but most likely between about 1930 - 1940. Specs are as follows -

 

Blade: 5/8 round point, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 8. Twin blade stabilisers. Minimal  hone wear that does include recent work. The blade is highly polished with just some superficial surface patination. It is decorated to the front with the words ‘Gotta Reg. Hamburg Ring Superfine’ within a decorative pennon, the centre of which is gold-washed (see photo below). The edge measures just under 2.75" from point to heel and is in great shape, being shave-ready.

 

Tang: Jimps (serrations) to the underside of the tang, the top is jimped to the shoulders only – a Gotta trademark. Marked to one side with the word ‘Gotta’ with a rectangle and the number ‘120’.

 

Scales: Faux ivory celluloid with rounded edge and chevronned ends – another Gotta trademark - in extremely fine condition. The front scale is inlaid with the word ‘Gotta’ in brass. Three pins with black scale spacer. Pins are good and blade is tight with no scale fouling on closure.

 

Box: Original box in good condition though worn.

 

Summary: Any regular visitor to this site will know how highly I rate Gotta razors as shaving instruments – in my opinion, one of the best hollow-ground razors ever to come out of Germany. This one is no exception and has a superlative blade – the word ‘superfine’ is totally justified. I think every straight razor user should have a Gotta in their ‘rotation’ – and you can of course make this one yours!
