PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made Koch & Schafer, Solingen Germany. Exact year is unknown but most likely between about 1920 - 1940. Specs are as follows -

 

Blade: 6/8 round point, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 9. Twin blade stabilisers. Evident though even  hone wear that does include recent work. The blade is well polished with just some general surface patination, very few signs of age being present. The edge measures just over 2.75" from point to heel and is in great shape, being shave-ready.

 

Tang: Jimps (serrations) to both top and underside of the tang. Marked to one side with the words 'Koch & Schafer, Wald-Solingen', the number '99' and a crown-on-column trade mark. The other side has the word 'KAMA' inside a rectangular cartouche. Both sides also have decorative strapwork.

 

Scales: Black celluloid with chamfered edge and in excellent condition. Three pins with white scale spacer. Pins are good and blade is tight with no scale fouling on closure. The front scale is also inlaid with the 'KAMA' logo (see photo below).

 

Box: Not original -new plain back razor box.

 

Summary: Another quality piece from Solingen but from a maker I haven't seen before – how many more are there to see!? - this would make a great daily razor for beginner or seasoned user alike.
