PLEASE NOTE -

This razor is offered for sale purely as a collector’s piece and we do not suggest or imply that it can be used for its original purpose of shaving. This is usually due to the fact that both blade and scales may well be fragile due to the age of the piece or that there may be damage to the blade in the form of nibbles or nicks. Individual pieces may have comments that contradict this statement, but these comments should only be applied to the piece in question, not as a general statement, thanks.

Having said that, most of the razors offered for sale within this collector’s section should, with care and skill, be suitable for restoration into a usable piece. They are offered here cleaned, disinfected and in some instances polished, though not honed.

If any of these razors contain animal products such as ivory, please ensure it is legal for you to acquire the piece prior to purchase, thanks. If you have any questions about this piece please email us, thanks.

This razor, thought to originate in France in about 1870 is by an unknown maker, the only lettering that is legible on the tang being the two letters ‘ME’ and the word ‘Duma(s?). It could well be a Dumas Aine make but I’m not sure. The blade is an oblique point 6/8 with a swept edge and is full-wedge in profile. There is plenty of patination and a degree of pitting to both sides of the blade. The edge is blunted but not a total loss as the metal appears fairly good and would I think respond to determined honing. The tang is slim in relation to the blade and there in no ‘trigger’ to it.

The scales are dark horn with a light-coloured spacer, contain two pins and are in good condition. Pins are good, no cracks are evident and blade action is tight with some difficulty in full opening to shaving angle - has probably just dried out completely. I have treated the scales with Neatsfoot oil, which should improve things.

An interesting old piece for your collection!
