PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor is made by A. See, Solingen Germany. Made for J. S. Torrence, San Francisco, for once it can be accurately dated to 1914 – 1915 as Torrence were not in business long!  Specs are as follows -

 

Blade: 4/8 square point with rounded nose, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 8. Twin blade stabilisers. Minimal  hone wear that does include recent work. The blade is well polished with little sign of age beyond a couple of superficial marks. The edge measures just over 2.5" from point to heel and is in great shape.

 

Please note that this razor is supplied SHAVE-READY for immediate use.

 

Tang: No jimps (serrations) to top or underside of tang. Marked to one side with the words 'Voltage Temper, Reg'd trade mark' and the number '24', the other side is marked 'A. See Brand, made in Germany' with a joined 'AC' logo.

 

Scales: Celluloid, imitation wood (snakewood I think) and in excellent condition. Two pins with white scale spacer. Pins are good and blade is tight with no scale fouling on closure though a little care is needed.

 

Box: Original and in good condition, impressed with the words 'J. S. Torrence, sole agents for A. See Co., Solingen Germany. Voltage Temper, reg'd trade mark.'

 

An attractive lightweight razor in excellent condition. Torrence were located at 9 Main Street, San Francisico California and were razor specialists. Unfortunately the firm were only in operation C. 1914 – 1915. A good starter razor or a nice collector's piece. I do shy away from that overused word 'rare' but surely there can't be too many of these available, given the short life of the company. And it's in great shape too!
