PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made by Fram of Solingen, Germany, C. 1920 - 1930. Specifications are as follows –

 

The blade is an 11/16 round point, fully swept and fully hollow ground to about Henckel scale 10. It’s in excellent condition with a good polish to the surface, this only being marred by superficial patination and one or two tiny pits. Hone wear is minimal and the edge shave-ready. It is engraved to the front side with the words ‘W. Betts, 1 New Bond St. Place, Bath’

 

The tang is a ‘hump-back’, jimped above and below for grip. It is struck to the front side with the word ‘Fram’ and the two-star trademark. The other side is struck ‘made in Germany’.

 

The scales are of black plastic with two pins and a white wedge spacer. They are in excellent overall condition with no crack, chips or splits. There is a small amount of sideplay to the blade so care should be taken on closure.

 

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in what is probably the original box – this does give the address as William Betts, 9a Upper Boro’ Walls but this is literally yards from New Bond Street Place so we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt!
