PLEASE NOTE -
This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that
the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY. Although perfectly suitable for inclusion
in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made
- facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage
and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor,
it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument.
If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will
appreciate this piece.

This straight razor is made by Brookes & Crookes, Sheffield, England. Exact year
is unknown but most likely between about 1880 - 1900. Specs are as follows -
Blade: 5/8 oblique point, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 3 – near full-wedge.
Pronounced but even even hone wear, does include recent work and exaggerated by
blade grind. The blade is highly polished though does carry a far amount of surface
marking – no pitting, though. It is undecorated. The edge measures just under 2.75"
from point to heel and is in fine shape.
Please note that this razor is supplied SHAVE-READY for immediate use.
Tang: No jimps (serrations) to top or underside of tang. Marked to one side with
the words 'Brookes & Crookes, Sheffield England' surrounding their 'bell' trademark.
Scales: Old ivory, very thin in cross-section and in excellent condition, though
the number '270-2' has been lightly incised into the pile scale at the bottom pin.
Possibly a pawn number? It wouldn't be the first time a razor of some value was pawned,
after all.Two pins with metal scale spacer. Pins are good and blade is tight with
no scale fouling on closure.
Box: Not original – new plain black razor box.
Brrokes & Crookes were general cutlers in Sheffield and in operation from about 1858
– 1947. This piece falls in their mid-period and would have been a quality item,
even with an undecorated blade. The edge is still as good as ever and has many years
service left in it. For those wanting to try a wedge-type blade, this would be a
very good choice.
