PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made by T. Noonan & Sons, USA under their ‘Twenty Grand’ trade mark, probably around 1940 – 1950. Specifications are as follows:

 

The blade is a 6/8 square point with rounded nose, fully hollow ground to about Henckel scale 12. It is highly polished though light surface patination is present. The edge is some 2.75” in length and is shave-ready.

 

The tang carries no jimping, both top and underside being smooth. It is struck the front with the words ’20 grand’ and to the other side with ‘T. Noonan & Sons, Boston Mass.’ Both sides have decorative strapwork.

 

The scales are in excellent condition, being faux ivory celluloid – quite a good imitation of the real thing. The two pins are tight and a black spacer is fitted.

 

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in a new black plastic razor box.

 

Though not remarkable for fancy scales or blade décor, this is nevertheless a quality piece, workmanlike and purposeful in appearance. Perhaps not the best choice for a complete beginner with that spike point but would certainly make a good daily razor for the more accomplished user.
