PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made Ford & Medley, Sheffield England around 1890 – 1900. Specifications are as follows –

 

The blade is an 11/16 oblique point, half-hollow ground to about Henckel scale 5 – quite a stiff grind. It is well-polished with few signed of age beyond some superficial surface ‘shading’. It has a slight but noticeable full sweep to its length.

 

The tang is struck to the front side with the words ‘Ford & Medley Sheffield Eng.’(land).

 

The scales are of black plastic with lead  spacer and in excellent and almost unmarked condition.

 

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in a new Invisible Edge black leather razor wallet.

 

Not from the cache of 1930’s F&M’s featured elsewhere on this site, this is an earlier model but in fine condition and especially suited to the user who likes a heavier, stiffer blade without going the full ‘big wedge’ route!
