PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made by Punktal, Solingen Germany. Exact year is unknown but most likely between about 1920 - 1930. Specs are as follows -

 

Blade: 9/16 round point, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 8. twin blade stabilisers. Minimal  hone wear that does include recent work. The blade is well polished with just some general very light surface patination. The edge measures just over 2.75" from point to heel and is in great shape, being shave-ready.

 

Tang: Jimps (serrations) to the underside and top of the tang. Marked to one side with the words 'Punktal Solingen' and the Punktal 'roundel' motif. The other side reads 'Hergestellt aus bestem Punktal Silberstahl' (made from the best Punktal silver steel) and also has the number '103' stamped. Both sides also have decorative strapwork.

 

Scales: Blonde celluloid, a nice butterscotch shade, with bevelled edge and in excellent condition. Three pins with black scale spacer. Pins are good and blade is tight with no scale fouling on closure. The front scale also has the Punktal name and roundel motif inlaid in white metal.

 

Box: Not original – new plain black razor box

 

Summary: a good-quality lightweight round point with very little wear apparent. Would make a good first razor or a nice addition to any 'stable'. Easy to handle and sits well in the hand.
