PLEASE NOTE -

 

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor is by Kropp of London, though ground in Hamburg. It was most likely made around 1920 - 1930.

 

The blade is a 5/8 round point, fully hollow-ground to about Henckel scale 10. The majority of the blade is mirror-polished except for a small pitted area near the nose on the front side. This has of course had all corrosion removed. Hone wear us evident but fairly even. The edge is some 2.75” long and is in excellent shape. It is engraved to the front side with the words ‘Made for Isaacs & Co.’

 

The tang is deeply jimped above and below for grip and has no visible marks beyond superficial patination of the metal. It is struck to the front with the word ‘Kropp’ and to the other side with the words ‘Ground in Hamburg’.

 

The scales are of black plastic and in excellent condition, secured by two pins with a white scale spacer. Blade action is smooth and tight with no scale fouling on closure.

 

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in its original box (see photo below), which is in good condition.

 

I like Kropp razors, having several in my own rotation. The Kropp Manufactuirng Company of London made countless thousands of razors, mostly forged and ground in Sheffield, with some also being ground at Hamburg. Their target market was the ordinary man in the street, and their razors (generally) reflect this – no-nonsense workmanlike pieces but of very good quality. I recommend them heartily.
