PLEASE NOTE -

This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY.  Although perfectly suitable for inclusion in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made - facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor, it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument. If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will appreciate this piece.

This straight razor was made by Joseph Rodgers & Sons, Sheffield England around 1880 – 1890. Specifications are as follows –

The blade is a 5/8 oblique point, ground to about Henckel scale 4, giving a stiff blade. It is engraved to the front with the words ‘The Celebrated Hollow Ground’. The blade is well polished though patination is evident. There is also some minor pitting and dark marking to the spine of the razor at the nose. Hone wear is also evident though even and the edge is in good order and shave-ready.

The tang has some corrosion marks though it is now well polished. No jimps are present either above or below. It is struck to the front side with the words ‘Joseph Rodgers & Sons, cutlers to their Majesties, No. 6 Norfolk Street Sheffield England.’

The scales are of dark plastic or composite material, somewhat faded with age. There is a small chip to the inside edge of the front scale – this may be due to a blade ‘catch’ sometime in the past. Otherwise the scales are in good order, the two pins being tight and the action smooth.

The razor will be supplied shave-ready in a period card box.

A nice example of a heavy hollow grind, this razor – made by one of the most famous cutlers in the World – has plenty of life left in and would make either a good starter piece or everyday razor for the more experienced user.

If you already own a razor - or several - that need honing to bring them back into a shave-ready state, why not take a look at our new website? It lists our services and full scale of charges - all available online!
