Dovo razors strops and accessories -
This straight razor is made by J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield England. Exact year is
unknown but most likely between about 1880 – 1890. Specs are as follows -
Blade: 5/8 round point, hollow ground to about Henckel scale 8. Twin blade stabilisers.
Minimal hone wear that does include recent work. The blade is well polished with
little sign of age beyond some patination near the spine. The spine is also marked
with the words ' Tuesday' and 'Friday' – this razor obviously being once part of
a seven-
Please note that this razor is supplied SHAVE-
Tang: Jimps (serrations) to both top and underside of tang. Marked to one side with
the words 'Krosskeys' and to the other 'J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield, established
A. D. 17** (the last two numbers are gone). This jibes a little with the date I have
seen elsewhere of 1848 though Goin's encyclopaedia of cutlery marking does list a
knife with exactly the same markings – including the missing numbers! -
Scales: Old ivory with chamfered edges and in excellent condition. Unusually shaped
as can be seen in the photo below – almost a 'gunstock' shape. Extremely thin in
cross-
Box: Not original – new plain black plastic razor box.
An interesting razor from this respected maker, it sits well in the hand and has taken a very good edge. Equally good for tyro or seasoned user, there are many years service left in this rather unusual piece.
