PLEASE NOTE -
This razor is shave-ready and is, therefore, literally RAZOR-SHARP. This means that
the edge will cut at a touch. IT IS NOT A TOY. Although perfectly suitable for inclusion
in a collection, it is primarily intended to be used for the purpose it was made
- facial shaving. This razor has been honed and stropped by myself to this stage
and I must again stress that, if you do not know how to handle this type of razor,
it should be treated with the respect shown to any very sharp knife or instrument.
If, of course, you are familiar with straight razor shaving then I do hope you will
appreciate this piece.

This straight razor is by Artis of Brighton, England. Year is unknown but most likely
around 1880. Specs are as follows -
Blade: 5/8 oblique point, ground to about Henckel scale 1 - full wedge, though there
is a slight concavity to the blade as can be seen in the photos below. Noticeably
swept edge. Evident hone wear across almost the whole blade width - this is very
much a true wedge blade with only a slight concavity to the centre portion, hence
any hone marks are exaggerated to say the least! The blade is well polished with
some darker marks to the pile side and a couple of superficial pits near the tip.
It is undecorated to either side . The edge measures just under 3" from point to
heel and is in excellent shape.
Please note that this razor is supplied SHAVE-READY for immediate use.
Tang: Jimps (serrations) to the underside of the tang, the top is smooth. Marked
to one side with the words ‘Artis Brighton’.
Scales: Old ivory, very slim in cross-section. Squared edge and in good condition,
no pin cracks. Good luminosity. Two pins with thin metal scale spacer. Pins are good
and blade is tight with a good action and no scale fouling on closure.
Box: Not original – new plain black razor box.
A little-known English maker coupled with the blade style and handle material make
this an unusual, certainly rare razor. I don’t think you will see too many like this!
The swept blade and oblique point are certainly dramatic but do not detract from
usability - in fact to some degree they enhance it. A great addition to any collection
or rotation.
