These soaps are handmade just one batch at a time by Phoenix and Beau, a family company based in Hitchin Hertfordshire known for their innovative fragrances and excellent quality shaving soaps. This one, new to their collection of fragrances, is called Star Noir is a scent inspired by their love of British music icon, David Bowie. It politely nods its cap to one of his favourite scents which was ‘Minotaure’ by Paloma Picasso.
It is described as a bohemian blend with top notes of jasmine, clary sage, bergamot and coriander. Anchoring the scent are layers of amber, musk, sandalwood, ylang ylang, benzoin and patchouli. Altogether this mix produces a very pleasant and subtle musky scent.
Phoenix and Beau recommend adding warm water (say around 4 to 5 tablespoons) to the top of the soap before use – a process called ” blooming “. Let the water sit on the soap whilst you have a bath or shower. At the same time place your brush in warm water to allow the hair to swell and absorb more water. When you are ready to start your shave remove the blooming water from the top of the soap. You can use this water to wet your face, covering it with the wonderful scent at the same time. Then using fairly brisk circular movements with your brush build up a lather in the soap dish. This shouldn’t take long, 10 to 15 seconds is usually all you need to build up a thick fragrant lather on your brush. Apply the lather to your face, again using a circular motion. This not only exfoliates the skin but lifts the beard hair thereby helping you to get a closer shave.
