Description

This vintage Heljestrand razor is a 5/8 size with a quarter hollow grind. The blade is mirror finish to both sides while the tang has jimping to the underside. The black composite scales are age compatible but non-original.

The tang of this vintage Heljestrand bears the marking “C.V. Heljesrand Eskilstuna Sweden” on one side and the MK mark with three crowns and the “No 23” on the reverse.

The MK23 is a quarter hollow grind and probably dates to the 1950s.

There is evidence of historical corrosion under the spine on both sides which I have tried to show in the photos. Otherwise it is in very good condition.

The Heljestrand business was founded in 1808 by Olof Heljestrand. Carl Victor Heljestrand was born in 1816 in Eskilstuna, Sweden, and began working in his father’s knife factory as a 12-year-old. He took over the business after the death of his brother.  Carl undertook several trips to England and acquired the neccessary additional skills to produce and process steel to a very high quality. The company was bought in 1925/26 by entrepreneur Magnus Kindal and razors started to bear his initials “M.K.”. Production ceased in 1980 when C.V. Heljestrand AB became insolvent.

Heljestrand razors were made with excellent steel and are popular with collectors. This is an opportunity to purchase a vintage razor from this sought-after Swedish maker at a very reasonable price.
