Vintage USA 4/8 Cattaraugus Cutlery Co Razor

£95.00

This is a 4/8 vintage razor from the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company in the US. It has an unmarked blade, square point, full hollow grind, of carbon steel with a plain spine. There are some small signs of historic corrosion but overall I would say the razor is in very good condition. The tang bears the words “BULLS EYE” “made by Solingen Germany Experts”. This phrase reflects a period at the Cattaraugus factory when it employed migrant German workers who had been trained in Solingen. The reverse of the tang has the words “Cattaraugus Cutlery Co Little Valley N.Y.” It has very attractive faux ivory scales which have metal finials at both ends together with a metal “Bulls Eye” motif, which lifts this razor above the norm.

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was founded by John Brown Francis Champlin and operated by members of the Champlin family for the entire existence of the company. The firm was originally called J.B.F. Champlin and founded in 1880. His son, Tint Champlin, joined the firm in 1882, and the name became J.B.F. Champlin & Son.

In 1886, Champlin`s brothers-in-law, the four Case Brothers, W.R., John D., Jean, and Andrew became members of the firm, and the name was changed to the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company. Cattaraugus became an official manufacturing concern in about 1890, when they purchased tools, equipment and a factory in Little Valley, New York, from the defunct Beaver Falls Cutlery Company. The Company hired expert cutlers from Germany, England, and other US manufacturers to produce high quality products, including straight razors. Cattaraugus was especially famous for its hunting knives and these are avidly sought after today by collectors.

Over time, the Case family separated from Cattaraugus to form W.R Case & Sons Cutlery Co, which was incorporated in 1905. Cattaraugus closed business in 1963. Two separate fires destroyed the building in August 2015 and August 2016.
