Vintage Osborne Garrett & Co Elmo Razor

£95.00

This vintage Elmo razor from Osborne Garrett & Co of Solingen is a 5/8 of silver steel with the goldwash “Elmo” mark on the blade still clearly visible. The razor has jimping to the upper and lower spine. The tang is marked “O.G & Co. Ltd 333” on one side and “Made of guaranteed silver steel Solingen made in Germany” on the reverse. The scales are very attractive despite being of composite with a third pin and the “ELMO” sunrise design inlaid into them. There are signs of corrosion near the end of the spine and a few other small spots, and a small crack by the spacer pin but overall the condition is good. The razor comes with its original box. Overall a very attractive razor with plenty of history.

The trademark “Elmo” was used by Osborne, Garrett & Co. razor and strop manufacturers who operated between 1899 and 1923 and had shops located 51 to 54 Frith Street, 8 to 11 Bateman Street and 34 to 35 Dean Street London W1 as well as in Birmingham, Glasgow & Manchester. They were also proprietors of the “Kropp” “Carrara” “Ogee” and “Osgar” brands of razor. The “Kropp” was the most well known with not much being written about the Elmo, despite there being many produced. Our research suggests that mention of the razor being made in Germany means it dates from before the First World War as later razors were described as being made in Sheffield, but we are not entirely sure how accurate that is.
