This vintage Dovo is of stainless steel with a 4/8 blade. The tang has the DOVO logo together with the words “DOVO STAINLESS” and the blade number “44”. The reverse of the tang bears the words “FRITZ BRACHT SOLINGEN GERMANY”. There is jimping to the upper and lower tang, a plain spine and a round point. The grind is half hollow or perhaps slightly thicker. The scales are of a composite with a faux ivory pattern and colouring, complemented by banding around the spacer pin. The blade marking would originally have been goldwash but that has largely worn away. All in all this is an attractive razor in good condition.
The world renowned razor manufacturer Dovo was established in 1906 by Carl Dorp and Carl Arthur Voos. During the 1930’s management of the company was handed over to Carl Dorp’s son. By 1939 Carl Dorp had become dissatisfied with the way the business was being run and made a deal to sell it to the trained straight razor grinder and manufacturer Fritz Bracht. Fritz Bracht had his own cutlery business which operated in Wald near Solingen. He also made razors under the brand name Bradrei. Bracht became the owner of the company in 1940, buying the remaining shares in 1944 when Carl Dorp died. The DOVO logo on the tang dates from 1953 and together with the mention of Fritz Bracht suggests the razor dates from around this time.
