Vintage Boxed Pair of G&W Higginbotham Tortoiseshell Razors
A real collector's item - a boxed pair of 4/8 near wedge razors from G&W Higginbotham of Sheffield in their original wooden case.
I estimate these razors to date from around 1850-1860 and believe them to be of genuine tortoiseshell. Please read the full description.
A real collector's item - a boxed pair of 4/8 razors from G&W Higginbotham of Sheffield in their original wooden case. The grind is a wedge or near wedge. The blades are unmarked, while the tang bears the manufacturer's stamp. The spines are plain while the underside of the thumb notch has jimping.
These razors are not without any trace of corrosion but are in an excellent condition which belies their age.
I estimate these razors to date from around 1850-1860 and believe them to be of genuine tortoiseshell. Why? Well, firstly the colouration and the fact that the dark patches are slightly blurred at the edges. Also, the scales are very thin, finely shaped at the pivot end, have metal spacers, and with no collars on the pins. Everything about these tells me they are genuine. They fit perfectly into the velvet lined shaped inner of the box which was clearly made for these razors, and is itself an attractive item.
George and William Higginbotham were manufacturers of knives, scissors and razors, operating in the first half of the 19th Century from premises on The Wicker in Sheffield.
Please do not purchase if located in a country which has banned the import of antique tortoiseshell.
