This vintage razor was made in Sheffield for the London based John Pound & Co. The razor has wonderful bone handles which are in excellent condition. It is a 6/8 size (narrower near the heel). The razor is marked as being hollow ground but I would say it is no thinner than a quarter hollow. There are signs of historic corrosion as you would expect for a razor of this age (late 19th Century) on and near the spine but overall the condition is good with minimal hone wear. The razor has a slightly inclined point.
The blade is marked “The Celebrated Hollow Ground Razor” and the tang is stamped"Sheffield" on one side and "John Pound & Co 81/4 Leadenhall Street E.C." on the other.
The razor will be honed, stropped and supplied shave ready.
John Pound & Co. was originally founded in 1823 in Leadenhall Street, London firstly under the name Pound & Tasker and then Henry Pound & Son. From 1861 John Pound went about building the business into a considerable enterprise. The business concentrated on high quality trunks and packing cases to begin, later taking in other types of luggage. The likelihood is therefore that this razor was manufactured by one of the better Sheffield cutler on behalf of John Pound & Co. perhaps to go into a luxury travel case.
Ultimately the company had several factories and shops in London until ultimately being taken over by the John Lewis Partnership in the 1950s. The brand was bought from John Lewis in 2013.
