This 6/8 vintage razor is from Taylor’s Eye Witness of Sheffield. The tang is marked accordingly while the blade is marked “Hollow Ground”. It is a full hollow grind. Rather than over polishing this I have given it just a very light polish in order to leave the original satin finish. As a result it has a nice aged patina but clearly there has been some historical corrosion. The razor has jimping both to the upper and lower tang. There is minimal hone wear to the spine. The razor has been fitted with new black plastic scales.
This razor has been honed and stropped and has a good clean edge. It is supplied shave ready. It is not offered as a perfect example but rather as an affordable way to acquire a very useable vintage Sheffield steel razor from a decent maker.
Taylor’s Eye Witness is still around today but the history goes back to around 1820 in Sheffield when John Taylor founded a cutlery firm in the Netherthorpe area of the city. The trade mark was granted in 1838 and the business moved to the Eye Witness Works on Milton Street where it is today.
The business subsequently merged the Needham’s business, with James Veall and with Tyzack’s becoming Needham, Veall & Tyzack in 1879. The business continued to survive and thrive through adopting mechanisation and ended up absorbing several well-known Sheffield cutlery companies and their trademarks. After several corporate changes the brand continues to survive to this day under the ownership of Taylor’s Eye Witness Limited.
